Communications- Summary

The three workshops I chose in Architectural Communications were Architectural Drawing (first), Material Modelling (second), and Motion in Architecture (third). Taking the workshops in this order was very convenient, as I used what I had learnt from the previous workshop(s) in the class I was in. Architectural Drawing was an extremely helpful starting workshop, as all the basics were covered in drawing techniques, which will be useful for future projects. This workshop enabled me to draw confidently with a felt tip pen, as previously I have resorted to using leads only, and I managed to produce final pen drawings that I was very satisfied with. I thoroughly enjoyed the second modelling workshop, as I have always been interested in learning new skills with model making. Some of the skills I attained from the workshop were learning how to cut correctly (especially balsa), techniques for attaching pieces together, and how to manipulate materials in numerous ways to produce a desired effect. The previous workshop allowed me to prepare for the model making as I sketched what I was going to construct, which made the process of model making easier. My work in the final motion workshop was greatly influenced by the skills I had learnt in the two earlier workshops. To produce my movie I had to build a model first, and then draw off the photos I took of the model. If I had not taken the two previous workshops I don’t think my work would have turned out as well as I would have liked it to be. All three workshops brought on new challenges; however the skills learnt in class were enough to overcome them, especially as we had the knowledge and guidance from my tutors. Dividing Communications into three workshops is a very effective way of learning new skills in a short time, which can be used for many projects in the future.
